California Rule of Professional Conduct and ABA Model Rule of Professional Conduct 5.4 feature a number of prohibitions designed to preserve the professional independence of lawyers, including prohibiting the sharing of legal fees with a nonlawyer, forming a partnership with a nonlawyer (if any of the activities of the partnership consist of the practice of law), and practicing in a business structure in which a nonlawyer owns any interest in the business or serves as a corporate director or officer. I’ve understood my whole life that there are many wellness benefits to writing in a journal. Self-reflection, stress relief, and recording good ideas are a few that come to mind. I realized these benefits in my teen and early adult years, when I regularly poured my deepest (and not so deep) thoughts out in page after page of my diary. But as my obligations increased over the years with working full time and a busy family life, I started to see journaling every evening as yet another pressure-filled, time-consuming chore rather than a healing opportunity, and abandoned the practice.
